Description

## Brief Description

45 million years ago, a subtropical climate prevailed and the Geiseltal was a swampy area. You can discover which animals and plants lived there back then at the Geiseltalmuseum – Fenster in die Vergangenheit.

## Description

About 100 years of lignite mining in the Geiseltal, southwest of Halle, uncovered not only lignite but also unique fossil finds.

The collection contains around 50,000 pieces in total. It is internationally recognized and respected mainly because of the condition of the fossils. Many of them are preserved in three dimensions, and fossilized tissue, stomach contents of animals, and even the colors of jewel beetles have been clearly identified. Usually, only bones and teeth remain in fossils. Research on the objects from the Geiseltal collection continues, because no new material will come from this area – the mining sites have been flooded.

At the Geiseltalmuseum, be sure to look out for the stars of the exhibition: the dog-sized early horses of the genus Propalaeotherium, the land-dwelling crocodile Boverisuchus, and the giant flightless bird Gastornis.
