Description

## Short Description

The Historische Gerberei Burg is a technical monument with a historic production facility. The Heimatverein Burg offers guided tours and an exhibition.

## Description

The large wooden barrels almost reach the ceiling: animal hides used to remain in the containers filled with tanning liquid for many weeks. Leather production was the most important industry in Burg, with 19 tanneries counted here in the 19th century. The tannery on Hainstraße was the last to close, only shutting down in 1991. Fortunately, the value of this historic heritage was recognized. The production equipment stayed in place, and the 15th-century building was restored.

Since then, the Heimatverein Burg has lovingly cared for this technical monument. A guided tour through the equipment makes clear how hard the work in the tannery must have been. The saying "to see your skins swim away" gains meaning here, as losing a valuable animal hide while washing it in the river was a major loss for the tanners. The exhibition also shows the further processing of leather in the shoe factory and the history of soap making.

## Parking Information

The parking lots Kesselstraße, Zerbster Straße, and Breiter Weg are near the tannery. You can park there free of charge for up to two hours.
