Description
## Brief Description
Experience the fascinating world of amber at Kreismuseum Bitterfeld and explore the region's history across three floors.
## Description
The Kreismuseum Bitterfeld is a cultural treasure that takes you on an exciting journey through nearly 800 years of the region's history. Located in the heart of the city, the museum was founded in 1892 by Emil Obst, a church administrator and passionate local historian. The collection was initially housed in the town hall before moving in 1901 to the former girls' school near the town church. Today, the museum offers a varied mix of history, nature, and technology spread over several floors.
A highlight is the Amber Cellar, where you can discover the famous Bitterfeld amber. Extracted as a byproduct from brown coal mining in Goitsche between 1972 and 1993, the amber impresses with its unique color and quality. Here you will learn not only how amber was discovered and processed in the region but also admire impressive jewelry and raw materials. The exhibition vividly illustrates the importance of amber for the region and beyond.
Besides the Amber Cellar, permanent exhibitions offer fascinating insights into the city’s history—from the Reformation to industrialization—as well as topics like biology, geology, and ballooning. The once-important stoneware industry of the region is also featured.
The museum is an ideal place for families, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers who want to learn more about Bitterfeld's eventful past and captivating amber. Whether sunny or rainy, Kreismuseum Bitterfeld is a worthwhile destination for every visit.
