Zuckermuseum Klein Wanzleben: Vom weißen Gold der Börde

Description
## Short description
Klein Wanzleben is all about sweets – the village even has a sugar beet in its coat of arms. In the town hall, visitors can explore the history of beet sugar production through the museum exhibition.
## Description
When the first sugar factory was founded in Klein Wanzleben in 1838, growing and producing sugar was still a sweaty business. The Sugar Museum on the upper floor of the town hall tells this story. It also shows how agricultural and industrial technology has changed over the years. Another section is dedicated to the nearly 900-year history of Klein Wanzleben. This permanent exhibition is small but well curated, and it is complemented by regularly changing displays.
As in many other places in the fertile Bördeland region, active cultivation began after the Napoleonic Continental Blockade cut off British colonial sugar imports. Production continued throughout the GDR era. After reunification, one of Europe’s most modern sugar factories was built in the 1990s, now part of Nordzucker AG. In the factory’s early years, more than 180 years ago, about 5,000 tons were produced per season; today production exceeds 13,000 tons per day. The exhibition shares these and other interesting facts.
