Stadt- und Bergbaumuseum Staßfurt: Entdeckung des Kalisalzes

Description
## Brief Description
World history was made here: A chance discovery turned Staßfurt into a pioneer of potassium salt mining. The dramatic development culminated in the Staßfurt city lake.
## Description
They were searching for table salt but found potassium salt. Until World War I, Staßfurt held the world monopoly on potash. However, mining caused massive ground subsidence and ultimately the loss of much of the medieval old town. Since the ground movements continue to this day, rebuilding the town center was never possible. The long-standing wound was only healed as part of the International Building Exhibition. Since 2010, the city lake has covered the unusable areas of the former old town and, together with the surrounding parks, has restored the heart of Staßfurt.
City and mining history are closely linked here. Both are impressively presented in the historic Salzgrafenhaus through a permanent exhibition and changing special exhibitions. The original large equipment, once used for work above and below ground, is impressive and today conveys mining history in the open-air museum yard.
