Description

The ReichsstadtMuseum Weißenburg offers an exciting journey through time from the Roman era, through the medieval period of the Free Imperial City, all the way to the early modern period and more recent history of Weißenburg.

Due to the building's layout, the exhibition highlights different aspects of the imperial city instead of following a chronological order.

A special highlight is the section dedicated to the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, featuring exhibits on imperial and constitutional history as well as the status of the Free Imperial Cities. Here you can also see the imperial coat of arms privilege from 1481, which granted Weißenburg its still valid city coat of arms.

A separate section is devoted to the citizen of the imperial city, the resident and defender of the city, showing the life of the medieval townspeople.

On the first floor, you will find exhibits on art and science, the democratic city constitution of 1377 with the city council, city court, as well as economic and health systems.

The tour concludes on the second floor with fascinating insights into the city fortifications, church, guilds, and crafts.
