Urdonautal-Museum
Description
The Urdonautal-Museum takes you on an exciting journey through the natural and landscape history as well as the earth sciences of the region. Here, fascinating exhibits and dioramas offer insights into prehistoric and early history, the local market history, and industrial development.
A highlight is the extensive collection around the centuries-old glassworks tradition that shaped the area until the mid-1980s. You can also discover archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, such as intricately decorated pottery shards and tools that document early human settlement.
Particularly remarkable is a fragmented child's skull found in a rock crevice, possibly evidence of a ritual human sacrifice. Other exhibits display artifacts from Bronze Age burial mounds (around 1600 BC) and ceramics from the Hallstatt period. The iron smelting of the Celts is vividly illustrated by a significant collection as well.
The visit is rounded off by a model of Wellheim Castle, bringing the 14th-century fortress to life – an important regional landmark with rich historical context.
