Bismarck-Museum in Schönhausen

Description
## Short Description
Otto von Bismarck was born on April 1, 1815, in Schönhausen (Elbe). A museum in the side wing of his birthplace commemorates the Chancellor of the Reich.
## Description
The von Bismarck family had already been settled in Schönhausen since 1562. Otto von Bismarck was born in one of the family's two manor houses in 1815 and baptized in the nearby Romanesque church. Just one year later, he moved with his family to Hinterpommern but returned in 1846 to take over the family estate. Here on the Elbe, the later Chancellor held his first public office – as a dike warden.
After World War II, the family estate was confiscated, and in 1958 the East German authorities demolished the house where the creator of the Socialist Laws was born. Only a side wing was preserved, which, after extensive restoration, became home to the Bismarck Museum in 1998. This museum’s predecessor had already been established during Bismarck’s lifetime in the family’s second house and existed until 1948. On display are paintings, furniture, a large coin collection, and numerous gifts the "Iron Chancellor" received from around the world.
